US Senate backs Trump again, blocking war powers resolution on Iran for fourth time
Senate has again blocked Democratic-led measure seeking to limit President Trump's authority to continue military operations against Iran
WASHINGTON, United States (MNTV) – The U.S. Senate has again blocked a Democratic-led measure seeking to limit President Donald Trump’s authority to continue military operations against Iran without congressional approval, voting 52-47 against advancing the war powers resolution more than six weeks after the U.S. and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran.
It was the fourth time Democrats have forced such a vote since the war began, and the fourth time it has failed in the face of near-unanimous Republican opposition.
Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky remained the only Republican to vote in favor, while Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman was the only Democrat to vote against it. Senator Jim Justice of West Virginia did not vote.
Senator Jim Risch of Idaho, the Republican chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, accused supporters of the resolution of effectively siding with Iran.
“Nobody is coming to help you, Iran, except for the 47 people over here,” he said before the vote. Democrats countered that they were seeking to reassert Congress’s constitutionally mandated power to declare war.
“I urge my colleagues to choose the path of peace before President Trump’s war becomes irreversible,” said Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island, the top Democrat on the Armed Services Committee. Democratic leaders have vowed to keep forcing war powers votes until the conflict ends or Congress authorizes continued fighting.
Trump said in an interview with Fox Business Network aired Wednesday that the war was close to over.
Pakistan’s army chief also arrived in Tehran on Wednesday to try to prevent a renewal of the conflict, as efforts to arrange a second round of talks continued following weekend negotiations that ended without agreement.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll published March 31 found that 60% of Americans oppose U.S. military strikes on Iran, with 74% of Republicans supporting the action compared with 7% of Democrats.
The House of Representatives is expected to consider a similar war powers measure later this week.
