Four Gaza doctors held in Israeli prison describe starvation and ‘catastrophic’ conditions, rights group says
Detainees held for extended periods without charge; scabies spreading amid lack of medical treatment
JERUSALEM (MNTV) – Four Palestinian doctors from Gaza detained in an Israeli prison are suffering from hunger and deteriorating health conditions they describe as “catastrophic,” according to Physicians for Human Rights Israel, which said its lawyer visited the detainees on Sunday.
The rights organization identified the four men as Dr. Mohammed Obeid, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, Dr. Murad al-Qouqa and Dr. Akram Abu Ouda, all held at Negev Prison in southern Israel without charge. The detainees told the visiting lawyer that prison conditions had not improved, describing the quantity and quality of food as “dangerously insufficient.”
They also reported the spread of scabies among the prison population amid a lack of treatment and inadequate medical response to illness.
The organization said Israeli courts had repeatedly extended the doctors’ detention in recent months without charges or legal representation.
The detainees described their situation as “catastrophic from both humanitarian and health perspectives.”
Among those detained is Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, who was arrested on December 27, 2024, after the Israeli army raided the facility, forced him out at gunpoint and put the hospital out of service.
