Unprecedented 36,000 Palestinians displaced in West Bank
UN warns Israel’s settlement expansion drives mass displacement and raises serious ethnic cleansing concerns
WEST BANK, Palestine (MNTV) — The United Nations has called on Israel to immediately halt its rapid settlement expansion in the West Bank, warning that over 36,000 Palestinians were forcibly displaced in a single year amid what rights officials described as a coordinated campaign of dispossession.
A report from the UN Human Rights Office covering the year to October 31, 2025, highlighted that Israel’s accelerating approval of illegal settlements and annexation of Palestinian land has triggered “unprecedented” displacement, with the mass expulsion amounting to unlawful transfer prohibited under international law.
The agency noted that settlements in East Jerusalem and elsewhere in the West Bank continue to expand aggressively, with 36,973 housing units approved in occupied Jerusalem and 27,200 elsewhere, alongside the creation of 84 new settlement outposts, bringing the total to over 300.
UN officials, including Ajith Sunghay, stressed that the pace of Israel’s campaign to seize Palestinian land while minimizing Palestinian presence has only intensified, exacerbating violence, restrictions, and discrimination.
Israeli settler attacks have surged, leaving at least six Palestinians dead since March and contributing to a total of 1,045 Palestinians killed in the West Bank since the Gaza war began in October 2023.
The UN documented 1,732 incidents of settler violence, including casualties and property damage, often carried out with impunity and coordinated support from Israeli authorities.
UN rights chief Volker Turk condemned the ongoing settlement expansion as a potential war crime, calling on Israel to halt construction, evacuate settlers, and end the occupation.
The report emphasized that forcible transfer of protected persons violates the Fourth Geneva Convention and may also constitute crimes against humanity.
