Macklemore launches Free Palestine tour after Sheeran split
Rapper begins Dublin performances after removal from Ed Sheeran tour, following public criticism over his pro-Palestinian statements
DUBLIN, Ireland (MNTV) — American rapper Macklemore has launched his Free Palestine tour in Dublin after being dropped from Ed Sheeran’s tour following public remarks supporting Palestinians and criticizing Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
According to BBC News, Macklemore performed at Dublin’s 3Arena before an audience of up to 13,000 people. The concert marked the opening of a tour announced after Sheeran’s decision to remove the rapper from his Loop Tour last month.
Macklemore, whose real name is Benjamin Haggerty, faced criticism from some Jewish organizations after saying “Free Palestine” at two concerts and making political statements about the death toll in Gaza. He also described Israel’s military campaign as genocide, an allegation Israel rejects.
The dispute brought renewed attention to the consequences artists can face when speaking publicly about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Macklemore’s removal from Sheeran’s tour followed his outspoken comments, while the launch of a separate tour has allowed him to continue performing under a banner explicitly expressing solidarity with Palestinians.
Before the Dublin concert, Macklemore had promised audiences several surprise guests. The performance drew attention not only as a musical event but also as a public statement of support for Palestinians amid continuing international debate over the war in Gaza.
The rapper’s position reflects a wider movement among musicians and cultural figures who have used performances and public platforms to call attention to Palestinian suffering.
Such advocacy has also generated disputes over freedom of expression, political speech and the professional consequences of taking a position on the conflict.
Sheeran’s decision to drop Macklemore prompted questions about how artists and tour organizers respond when performers make controversial political statements.
The circumstances surrounding the decision have placed the relationship between commercial partnerships and public advocacy under renewed scrutiny.
Macklemore’s tour begins as Palestinians continue to face the consequences of Israel’s military operations and the destruction of civilian infrastructure in Gaza.
International criticism of Israel’s conduct has grown alongside calls for accountability, humanitarian access and protection of civilians.
The BBC report said Macklemore’s tour began in Dublin, with further performances planned in Paris and London. The rapper has also committed to donating tour proceeds to organizations supporting Palestinians.
