Trump turns on Mamdani over plans to tax New York’s wealthiest residents
Trump has turned sharply against New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani over the mayor's plans to tax the city's wealthiest residents
NEW YORK, United States (MNTV) – President Donald Trump has turned sharply against New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani over the mayor’s plans to tax the city’s wealthiest residents, appearing to walk back the surprisingly warm relationship the two had maintained since Mamdani took office in January.
“Sadly, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York! It has no chance! The United States of America should not contribute to its failure. The TAX, TAX, TAX Policies are SO WRONG. People are fleeing. They must change their ways, AND FAST. History has proven, THIS ‘STUFF’ JUST DOESN’T WORK,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The post came after Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled a pied-à-terre tax — a first for New York State — placing an annual surcharge on homes valued above $5 million when the owner’s primary residence is outside New York City.
The tax is a centerpiece of Mamdani’s campaign promise to address the city’s $5.4 billion budget shortfall by taxing the ultra-wealthy.
The friction marks a notable shift from a dynamic that had surprised political observers. Since taking office, Mamdani had made multiple visits to the Oval Office, with the two finding common ground on housing development and a shared affection for New York City.
On CBS Mornings the day before Trump’s post, Mamdani said: “We’ve had a number of meetings now in the Oval Office, and we are honest, direct about the fact that we have many disagreements. There is one place of agreement — we both love New York City.”
Trump had previously threatened to withhold federal funding from the city if Mamdani won the mayoral race last year, endorsing former Governor Andrew Cuomo instead.
The city receives billions of dollars annually from the federal government.
