Cuba confirms diplomatic talks with US in Havana over energy blockade
Cuba has confirmed it recently held diplomatic talks with senior US officials in Havana, first such meeting on Cuban soil since 2016
HAVANA, Cuba (MNTV) – Cuba has confirmed it recently held diplomatic talks with senior U.S. officials in Havana, the first such meeting on Cuban soil since 2016, as the Caribbean nation faces a deepening crisis stemming from Washington’s economic pressure campaign.
Cuban deputy foreign minister-level representatives met with U.S. assistant secretaries of state in an exchange described by Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs official Alejandro García del Toro as conducted “respectfully and professionally,” with no threats or deadlines issued by the U.S. delegation. Neither side has confirmed exactly when the meeting took place or disclosed which U.S. officials attended.
“The elimination of the energy embargo against the country was a top priority for our delegation,” García del Toro said, describing the embargo as “an unjustified punishment of the entire Cuban population” and “a form of global blackmail against sovereign states.”
Washington is pressing Havana to end political repression, release political prisoners and liberalize its economy as conditions for any easing of sanctions.
Trump threatened tariffs on any country selling oil to Cuba in late January and has suggested possible military intervention on the island. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said last week his country is prepared to fight if that occurs.
