Syria launches 2030 strategy to revive livestock sector
Government plan targets herd recovery, aquaculture expansion, and stronger veterinary systems to improve rural livelihoods and food security
DAMASCUS, Syria (MNTV) — Syria has unveiled a comprehensive Livestock Sector Strategy 2030 aimed at restoring production capacity, improving sustainability, and strengthening national food security after years of severe agricultural losses.
The plan targets livestock, poultry, and fisheries, which support major segments of rural livelihoods and the country’s agri-food supply chains, according to Syrian Arab News Agency.
Official data show livestock numbers have dropped by about 40 % in recent years due to infrastructure damage, climate pressures, weakened veterinary services, and feed shortages.
Authorities say the strategy prioritizes rebuilding cattle and sheep herds, introducing high-yield breeds through structured imports, rehabilitating artificial insemination centers, and expanding poultry production to boost productivity.
Feed security measures include modernizing feed mills, promoting locally sourced feed alternatives, expanding climate-resilient fodder crops, and improving quality testing and certification systems in line with international standards.
The strategy also emphasizes freshwater aquaculture, with plans to expand hatcheries, increase fish fingerling production, promote cage farming, and encourage private-sector investment through regulatory and financial incentives.
Veterinary services will be strengthened through upgraded laboratories, enhanced quarantine systems, expanded vaccine production, and disease surveillance aligned with global health standards. A national early-warning system for zoonotic diseases is also planned under a “One Health” framework.
Officials said a nationwide livestock data-registration system, alongside training programs and facility upgrades, will support traceability, planning, and compliance with regional and international quality benchmarks.
The government said the 2030 roadmap is designed to support economic recovery, stabilize rural incomes, and reinforce Syria’s long-term food security.
