Qatari delegation visits Tehran as diplomatic efforts to secure US-Iran deal resume
Team led by adviser to Qatar's prime minister and foreign minister, Iranian state media reports
TEHRAN (AA) – A Qatari delegation arrived in Tehran on Friday for meetings with Iranian officials as diplomatic efforts gathered pace to revive negotiations between Iran and the United States, according to Iranian state media.
Iran’s IRNA news agency reported that the delegation, led by a senior adviser to Qatar’s prime minister and foreign minister, was expected to discuss relations between the two countries and broader regional developments.
Earlier, Al Jazeera reported that Qatari mediators had returned to the Iranian capital to pursue an agreement aimed at ending the conflict between Washington and Tehran, with the diplomatic initiative being coordinated with the US.
The visit comes amid renewed efforts to bring the two sides back to the negotiating table after previous attempts to reach an agreement stalled.
The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that US Vice President JD Vance had sent a letter to Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei in a bid to restart the negotiations.
A senior Iranian official told the semi-official Fars News Agency on Thursday that Tehran had received the communication but had not yet issued a response.
The conflict began on Feb. 28, when the US and Israel launched military strikes against Iran. Tehran subsequently retaliated with attacks targeting Israel and US positions in several Arab countries.
Washington and Tehran reached a framework agreement in June and later entered negotiations. However, the diplomatic process broke down amid disagreements over freedom of navigation and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
The strategic waterway is a vital corridor for international energy shipments and global trade, making its security a central issue in efforts to resolve the conflict.
