Tunisia ranks ninth globally in date production
North African producer maintains strong output as Arab countries dominate global date farming sector
TUNIS, Tunisia (MNTV) — Tunisia ranked ninth in the world for date production in 2023, harvesting about 386,400 tonnes and reinforcing its reputation for premium date varieties, particularly the widely prized Deglet Nour.
Global date production remains heavily concentrated in Arab countries, where desert climates, traditional cultivation methods, and adapted irrigation systems support large-scale palm farming, according to recent data compiled by World Population Review.
Egypt leads global production with around 1.9 million tonnes, followed by Saudi Arabia with about 1.6 million tonnes cultivated across extensive plantation areas. Algeria ranks third with roughly 1.3 million tonnes and the world’s largest palm grove area.
Other major producers include Iraq with more than 635,000 tonnes, Pakistan with about 503,800 tonnes, Sudan with around 442,700 tonnes, and Oman with nearly 394,900 tonnes, driven by favorable climates and export-oriented strategies.
The United Arab Emirates completes the top ten, producing approximately 329,400 tonnes, focusing on premium varieties and modern irrigation technologies for Asian and European markets.
Tunisia’s continued high ranking highlights its strong agricultural heritage and export potential in the global date market, particularly for high-quality desert-grown varieties.
