Planned Outage in Toronto’s East York Leaves Residents Sweltering
As the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) faces scorching temperatures reaching up to 36°C, residents of an East York apartment building endured several hours without power today due to a planned outage by Toronto Hydro.
The maintenance work began at 8 a.m. and was expected to be completed by 1 p.m. However, the early morning outage caused significant inconvenience for many tenants. 
Residents expressed concerns about health risks, especially for vulnerable groups. “My partner has asthma and had trouble breathing,” one resident told reporters. Others voiced concerns about the potential dangers to seniors, young children, and pets in the building, fearing issues such as heat stroke and dehydration.
Toronto Hydro informed the media that the maintenance was essential for long-term safety and reliability; however, the timing coincided with one of the hottest stretches of weather since the 2016 heatwave.
