EU joins US-led financial pressure campaign against Iran: Bessent
US Treasury chief welcomes European Union’s participation in “Operation Economic Outcast” targeting Iran’s access to global financial system
ANKARA (MNTV) — The European Union has joined a US-led campaign aimed at tightening Iran’s access to the international financial system, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Friday.
Bessent announced that the bloc had formally joined “Operation Economic Outcast,” a Washington-led initiative designed to increase financial pressure on Tehran.
“The European Union has officially joined Operation Economic Outcast and we appreciate their strong and early stance,” Bessent wrote on X.
He said Washington and its allies were seeking to stop the Iranian government from using international financial networks to finance its nuclear and weapons programs as well as groups backed by Tehran across the region.
Bessent said the move reflected a broader international effort to further restrict Iran’s financial access.
He added that the campaign would continue until what he described as Iran’s remaining financial “lifelines” were cut off.
