No Islamophobia In Our Schools: DDSB
The Durham District School Board (DDSB) is on a winning streak. Following its groundbreaking initiative to invite feedback from the entire school community – including parents, students, faculty, junior staff, and vendors – on its ‘Multi-Year Strategic Plan,’ DDSB has now introduced another significant strategy aimed at addressing social, cultural, and religious biases, including Islamophobia, within its schools.
This strategy, developed with the help of its Education Team, aims to create a more inclusive environment for Muslim students, affirm their presence, and proactively tackle Islamophobia before it arises in any school-related activities.
The DDSB’s approach has been positively received by Muslim students, their parents, and staff, who believe it will help protect them from marginalisation due to their faith. The strategy emphasises the importance of safety and inclusiveness for all students, ensuring that no one feels left out, unwelcome, or attacked in the classroom.
This initiative is seen as a continuation of DDSB’s commitment to dismantling racism and discrimination through its Anti-Oppression Strategy, which aligns with the guiding principles of its multi-year strategic plan.
