It’s True! “CRA Targeted Muslim Charities”
No more denials. No more pushbacks. The truth is now clear, and it does not reflect well on the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and its Review and Analysis Division (RAD).
After years of complaints from Canadian Muslim charities alleging that the CRA was systematically targeting them, their concerns have been validated. A recently released report from the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency (NSIRA), an independent government agency responsible for assessing national security and intelligence activities in Canada, found that the CRA failed to justify its choice to audit Muslim charities based on suspected links to “terrorism.” In the absence of such justification, NSIRA concluded that CRA’s decisions were “driven by bias and discrimination.”
On Parliament Hill, Imam Sikander Hashmi, Executive Director of the Canadian Council of Imams, along with representatives from the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), urged the federal government to address this troubling issue. They emphasised that it reveals deep-seated problems within the CRA and its affiliates.
Muslims across Canada, particularly those involved in charitable work in the Greater Toronto Area, expressed relief at the report’s findings, while also remaining concerned about the damaging consequences of what they perceive as implicit bias and Islamophobic intent within one of Canada’s premier institutions – the CRA.
They pointed out that not only were Muslim organisations targeted by the government with questionable and unfounded allegations of terrorism financing, but the audit process and potential revocations have created a chilling effect that undermines the Canadian Muslim charitable sector. This situation also poses risks to the security and well-being of Muslims throughout Canada.
