Trump administration designates Afghanistan ‘state sponsor of wrongful detention’
US officially designated Afghanistan a "State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention" over Taliban's practice of arbitrarily holding American citizens
WASHINGTON, United States (MNTV) – The United States has officially designated Afghanistan a “State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention” over the Taliban’s practice of arbitrarily holding American citizens and foreign nationals, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio demanding the immediate release of detained U.S. citizens and warning Americans against travel to the country.
“The Taliban continues to use terrorist tactics, kidnapping individuals for ransom or to seek policy concessions. These despicable tactics need to end,” Rubio said in an official statement.
He warned that “it is not safe for Americans to travel to Afghanistan because the Taliban continues to unjustly detain our fellow Americans and other foreign nationals.”
Rubio specifically named American citizens currently held in Afghanistan, demanding: “The Taliban needs to release Dennis Coyle, Mahmoud Habibi, and all Americans unjustly detained in Afghanistan now and commit to cease the practice of hostage diplomacy forever.”
The designation marks a significant escalation in Washington’s efforts to pressure the Taliban government and carries diplomatic and potential legal consequences, further isolating the regime internationally and potentially triggering sanctions or other punitive measures.
