Qatar Airways, Google debut Starlink-powered inflight ad challenge
First-of-its-kind initiative generates, edits, and uploads commercials during flight
DOHA (MNTV) — Qatar Airways, operating the largest fleet of Starlink-equipped widebody aircraft, launched the “Sky Studio Challenge,” an innovative collaboration with Google that demonstrated full commercial production entirely inflight using Starlink connectivity.
The experiment aboard a Starlink-enabled Airbus A350 flying from Doha to Atlanta, successfully generated, produced, finalized, and uploaded two commercials over a 15-hour ultra-long-haul journey at 35,000 feet.
Leveraging Google’s Gemini AI models for video and image generation, the initiative allowed real-time collaboration with ground teams, complex scene rendering, and cloud-based workflows, all at speeds comparable to home broadband networks.
The project brought together acclaimed AI filmmakers PJ Accetturo, known for viral campaigns such as the Kalshi NBA Finals spot, and Torey Kohara, a tech-focused director celebrated for cinematic narratives that translate complex concepts into compelling visuals.
Babar Rahman, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communications at Qatar Airways, highlighted that the challenge underscores the airline’s leadership in inflight connectivity.
He added that it enables passengers to experience cutting-edge technology and industry-first achievements in real time.
Google Regional Marketing Director for the Middle East and Africa, Najeeb Jarrar, noted the project showcases the potential of AI tools such as Veo 3.1 to create high-quality campaigns on rapid timelines, enabling marketers to move from brief to launch within hours.
