Poetry event in Kuala Lumpur supports Palestinian arts and healing

Writers and performers unite to raise funds for Palestinian cultural preservation and psychosocial programs

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (MNTV) — A diverse group of writers and performers will gather on April 12 in Kuala Lumpur for “One Hour: On Belonging,” an event aimed at supporting the Owneh Initiative in Palestine. 

The initiative focuses on preserving Palestinian arts and providing psychosocial workshops to help children and adults heal from the impacts of conflict.

Organized by Persatuan Penulis Berbilang Bahasa (PEN Malaysia), the event combines poetry, satire, and performances to express solidarity with Palestinians. 

It will feature a variety of voices, including renowned poet Haya Abunasser from Gaza, whose works explore themes of justice, war, hope, and resilience.

The event will also highlight the poetry of Pacifist Farooq, a Rohingya poet from Myanmar’s Rakhine state, reflecting on his own experiences of displacement and survival.

Adding to the evening’s rich lineup are several Malaysian contributors. Poets Jack Malik and Sheena Baharudin, activists Marina Mahathir and Mahi Ramakrishnan, and actors Tony Eusoff, Ida Nerina, Arief Hamizan, and Ali Alasri will share their works and performances. 

Writer Sheena Gurbakhash will also lend her voice to the cause.

The fundraiser serves not only as an artistic celebration but also as a beacon of hope, emphasizing the importance of cultural preservation and mental health support for Palestinians. 

All proceeds will go toward sustaining Palestinian arts and facilitating the Owneh Initiative’s vital healing programs.
