Ontario’s “Second” Niagara Falls, A Destination Few Know About. Yours to Explore this Spring.
Ontario boasts many breathtaking natural wonders, and while Niagara Falls often captures the spotlight, another magnificent waterfall is particularly enchanting in spring, and not many know about it.
Nestled in Northern Ontario, Kakabeka Falls towers over a rugged gorge, where the rushing water, fresh greenery, and early wildflowers create a landscape that feels straight out of a postcard.
Located in Kakabeka Provincial Park, just outside Thunder Bay, Kakabeka Falls is the second-highest waterfall in Ontario, earning it the nickname “Niagara of the North.”
The Kaministiquia River feeds the falls and plunges over 40 meters into a dramatic gorge carved into the ancient Precambrian Shield. The rock formations here have been shaped by glacial meltwater over thousands of years.
One of the most intriguing aspects of this landmark lies beneath the waterfall, where fossils dating back 1.6 billion years have been discovered, adding to the area’s allure.
Spring is a particularly lovely time to visit, with quieter boardwalk trails, crisp air, and scenic lookout points that allow you to appreciate the powerful falls as the surrounding forest bursts back to life.
Highlights: Walking along the Boardwalk Trail is one of the best ways to experience the park. Starting just steps from the main parking area, this 750-meter route winds along elevated walkways and across a pedestrian bridge, providing stunning up-close views of the rushing waterfall.
Lookout platforms on both sides of the cascade give you multiple angles to admire the dramatic water flow as it crashes into the gorge below.
As the weather warms, you can relax by a small beach located upstream along the Kaministiquia River.
For those seeking a longer escape, camping in the park offers an immersive experience in the Northern Ontario wilderness.
How to Get There: Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park is situated along Highway 11/17, 30 kilometers west of Thunder Bay.
Ample parking is available right off the highway next to the visitor center.
