Ms Rachel highlights Sudanese children’s voices at Emmy Awards
YouTube preschool star wears dress embroidered with messages from Sudanese and Congolese children, calls for greater global support
KHARTOUM, Sudan (MNTV) – Popular children’s educator and YouTube personality Rachel Accurso, widely known as Ms Rachel, used the red carpet at the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards in the United States to spotlight the voices of children affected by conflict in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Accurso attended the ceremony on Monday as a nominee for Outstanding Preschool Series and Outstanding Writing in a Preschool Series. She wore a dress embroidered with messages written by 11 children from Sudan and the DRC and carried their photographs to the event.
Speaking after the ceremony, Accurso said she shared the children’s words with attendees and urged greater global support for children living in conflict zones.
Among the Sudanese children featured were Masajid, who expressed her desire to become an engineer to help rebuild her country, and Zahraa, who said she hopes to become a doctor to treat the sick.
From the Democratic Republic of Congo, Saidati said she aspires to become a teacher, inspired by Accurso’s work, while Solange said he hopes to help others in the future, just as others have helped him.
Although Accurso did not win the top award, which went to the long-running children’s program Sesame Street, she said she was encouraged to see many people in the industry committed to children’s welfare.
Accurso thanked the Sudanese American Physicians Society and The Future of Congo for supporting the initiative.
The educator has previously spoken out on behalf of children affected by conflict in Gaza, Ukraine and Sudan. In November, she wore a gown featuring artwork from children in Gaza during a separate awards ceremony.
Accurso frequently uses her online platform to raise awareness about humanitarian crises and has supported relief efforts assisting children impacted by war.
