‘Malaysian students in Middle East safe’
All 1,936 Malaysian students studying in the Middle East region are reported to be safe, says Higher Education Minister
BACHOK, Malaysia (MNTV) — All 1,936 Malaysian students studying in the Middle East region are reported to be safe, says Higher Education Minister Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, as quoted by The Star.
He said that through close cooperation with the Foreign Ministry, his ministry was monitoring the situation and currently, no student was reported to be in distress or have sustained any injury, he added.
“So far, we have not received any report about concerning situations, and there has yet to be any request by students to be brought home.
“Education Malaysia (EM), based in Dubai and Jordan, are monitoring the entire Arab countries and reporting on the status of our students well,” he said at a media conference.
He also urged any Malaysian students in Arab countries who are studying on their own and have yet to register with embassy officials or EM to do so immediately, as it would allow the government to prepare actionable rescue plans should the situation in the region become critical.
Based on current registration records, the majority of students, numbering 1,762, are in Jordan, followed by Saudi Arabia (135), the United Arab Emirates (21), Kuwait (nine), Iran (six) and Qatar (three).
