Maldives island plans solar panels for every home

MALÉ, Maldives (MNTV) — A local council in the Maldives has unveiled an ambitious plan to install rooftop solar panels on every home on the northern island of Hanimaadhoo, as the low-lying archipelago seeks to expand renewable energy and reduce households’ dependence on costly imported fuel.

The Hanimaadhoo Council said it will begin surveying residents this year before rolling out the project in four or five phases, according to local media.

Council Vice President Firaq Mohamed said the initiative fulfills a campaign pledge and is intended to make solar power available to every household on the island, although participation will remain voluntary.

Under the proposed financing model, the council would cover 50% of installation costs, while homeowners would pay the remaining half. Officials said some residents may choose not to participate because of the upfront contribution.

The council estimates the project will cost about 10 million Maldivian rufiyaa ($646,000) though the final budget will be determined after the household survey is completed.

Several companies have already expressed interest in participating in the project, Firaq said.

He said the initiative could reduce electricity bills for most households to nearly zero, while significantly lowering energy costs for larger homes with higher power consumption.

The Maldives relies heavily on imported diesel to generate electricity, making power generation expensive and exposing the island nation to fluctuations in global fuel prices. 

Expanding solar energy has become a key national priority as the country works to improve energy security, reduce carbon emissions and lower electricity costs across its dispersed island communities.

Hanimaadhoo, located in Haa Dhaalu Atoll in the northern Maldives, is one of the country’s larger inhabited islands and is undergoing infrastructure expansion, including the development of an international airport intended to improve connectivity and tourism in the region.
