Rogers Made Deceptive Promises While Marketing Its ‘Infinite’ Wireless Plans.
Rogers Communications Inc. has been ordered to pay a $15 million administrative penalty for misleadingly marketing its “Infinite” wireless phone plans.
In December 2024, the Competition Bureau filed an application with the Competition Tribunal, alleging that Rogers’ advertisements falsely implied the plans offered unlimited data. In reality, the service is severely throttled once a data cap is reached.
The tribunal released a summary of its decision yesterday (Wednesday), and it will make the full reasons public within the next 10 business days.
The tribunal also ordered Rogers to issue a corrective notice and cover the bureau’s legal costs.
The Competition Bureau initially sought a $15 million penalty and customer refunds, or a $135 million penalty if the tribunal deemed refunds inappropriate.
Jeanne Pratt, the interim competition commissioner, said Canadians rely on accurate, truthful information when choosing essential services like wireless plans.
“Misleading advertising can distort consumer choice, erode confidence in the marketplace, and disadvantage businesses that compete fairly,” said Pratt.
Rogers defended its plans, saying it introduced them in 2019 to eliminate overage fees during a period of rapidly increasing data usage.
