Malaysia named world’s top retirement destination for 2026
Relocation index ranked it first of 192 countries, citing low costs and healthcare, while flagging safety concerns
SINGAPORE (MNTV) — Malaysia has been ranked the world’s best retirement destination for 2026 in a global relocation index, scoring 75.8 out of 100 to top 192 countries and territories, ahead of Panama and Portugal, the outlet VN Express reported.
The index, from the Singapore-based advisory firm Rumavi, assessed countries on 24 metrics across finance and tax, livability and health, safety, and opportunity, weighting healthcare quality and foreign-income tax treatment most heavily for retirees.
Malaysia — Southeast Asia’s third-richest country by GDP per capita, after Singapore and Brunei — scored highest on affordability (97.8) and favorable treatment of foreign income (85), though the index flagged street safety and rule of law as areas of concern.
It also ranked Malaysia first globally for digital nomads.
Three other Southeast Asian countries made the global top 10: Thailand (fourth), the Philippines (eighth), and Brunei (11th).
The Philippines scored well on affordability but poorly on climate risk and rule of law.
Malaysia has actively courted retirees through its “Malaysia My Second Home” long-stay visa program.
