Kazakhstan dominates World Boxing Championships with 7 gold medals
Kazakh team asserts global boxing dominance in Liverpool as new governing body World Boxing stages its first championship ahead of 2028 Olympics
ASTANA, Kazakhstan (MNTV) — Kazakhstan’s national boxing team emerged as the standout force at the 2025 World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, capturing seven gold medals and cementing its reputation as one of the sport’s global leaders.
The tournament, which concluded on September 14, was the first world championship organized by World Boxing, a newly formed governing body that replaced the International Boxing Association as the main authority for Olympic qualification.
According to the Kazinform News Agency, Kazakhstan’s strong showing has reinforced its athletes’ standing ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
A major storyline of the event was the rivalry between Central Asian neighbors Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Together, the two nations won 13 of the 20 available gold medals — a remarkable 65 percent of the total.
Kazakhstan topped the gold medal table with seven titles, while Uzbekistan took six but led the overall medal count with 11. The balance of power underscored how the region has become a dominant force in international boxing.
Kazakhstan’s victories were spread across men’s and women’s divisions, highlighting the squad’s depth. In the men’s over-90 kg category, Aibek Oralbay secured one of the championship’s most anticipated bouts by defeating Uzbekistan’s Jahongir Zokirov.
On the women’s side, Alua Balkibekova (51 kg), Aida Abikeyeva (65 kg), and Natalya Bogdanova (70 kg) all clinched gold, showcasing the country’s growing strength in female boxing.
The championship also signaled a new chapter for the sport. World Boxing, established after years of disputes over governance and Olympic recognition, now serves as the official pathway to the Los Angeles 2028 Games. Several countries — including Russia and Belarus — were absent from the Liverpool event, as they have not yet joined the new framework.
Despite notable performances from teams such as India and Brazil, no delegation could rival the Central Asian heavyweights. Host nation England finished with two silver and three bronze medals but fell short of winning gold.
Kazakhstan’s commanding performance in Liverpool not only consolidated its dominance on the world stage but also positioned its athletes as frontrunners for Olympic glory in the next Olympic cycle.
