Kazakh students develop ‘Smart Glasses’ for visually impaired
A team of young Kazakh inventors has developed AI-powered “smart glasses” designed to help visually impaired users
ALMATY, Kazakhstan (MNTV) — A team of young Kazakh inventors has developed AI-powered “smart glasses” designed to help visually impaired users navigate their surroundings, Silk Way TV reported.
The device was created by students Keldibek Zhangali and Aiaru Kalbek from the Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Turkistan. Equipped with GPS and an obstacle-detection system, the glasses warn wearers of approaching hazards and can automatically message family members through the Telegram app if needed.
“To improve our prototype, we released a second version of our device based on the Raspberry Pi microcomputer,” Zhangali said. “We worked on the second prototype during the summer holidays, and by September it was ready.”
Kalbek said the project, called Vision AI, uses artificial intelligence to recognize the environment and guide users with the help of GPS. “It’s not only an innovative project, but also a tool to assist the visually impaired,” she said.
The students now plan to integrate ChatGPT into the glasses, enabling the device to answer questions and assist with communication in addition to navigation. The current version supports Russian, and the team hopes to add Kazakh and English in the future.
