International coalition urges medical access, release of Imran Khan
More than 40 global scholars and rights advocates cite reported health concerns, call for due process for Pakistan’s former prime minister
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (MNTV) — A broad coalition of international scholars, artists, elected officials, jurists, journalists and faith leaders has issued a humanitarian appeal expressing concern over the reported medical condition of former Prime Minister Imran Khan while in custody.
In a letter signed by more than 40 public intellectuals, academics and activists worldwide, the group called for Khan’s release and urgent access to his family and physicians, according to Pakistan Today.
The signatories cited what they described as credible reports of a serious deterioration in Khan’s health, including significant ocular damage allegedly linked to delays in medical treatment during detention.
The appeal urged immediate access to independent specialist doctors, full transparency regarding his medical condition and strict adherence to domestic legal protections and internationally recognized standards governing the treatment of detainees.
Emphasizing that the initiative is humanitarian rather than political, the statement said the appeal is not intended to influence political outcomes.
It stressed that international legal norms and human rights principles require that all detainees, regardless of political affiliation, be treated with dignity, afforded due process and provided adequate medical care.
Those endorsing the appeal include public officials, academics, jurists and civil society representatives from Europe, North America, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia.
The signatories called for full disclosure of medical findings and records, humane conditions of detention consistent with Pakistani law and international human rights obligations, and respect for due process.
Organizers said they are preparing to form an international humanitarian delegation of global figures to seek meetings with Pakistani authorities to encourage medical transparency and compliance with established rights standards.
The initiative is backed by the Community Alliance for Peace & Justice, the Coalition to Change US Policy on Pakistan and the Center for the Study of Islam & Decolonization.
Organizers said the protection of detainees’ fundamental rights is a universal humanitarian concern and that access to medical care in custody should not become a matter of political dispute.
