Ebola deaths in DR Congo reach 600 as outbreak spreads to a new province
Congolese health officials reported that 600 people have now died in country's ongoing Ebola outbreak
KINSHASA, DR Congo (MNTV) – Congolese health officials reported Wednesday that 600 people have now died in the country’s ongoing Ebola outbreak, with confirmed infections climbing to 1,759.
Roughly 750 patients have recovered and 285 are still receiving treatment.
The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, has centered on 37 health zones across Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu — with Ituri alone responsible for over 90% of cases and more than 84% of deaths since the outbreak was declared on May 15.
The newest update flagged two infections in Kisangani, in Tshopo province, traced back to Ituri’s Nia-Nia health zone.
The WHO’s Africa office cautioned on Tuesday that deaths in the community are rising and that infections keep reaching health zones previously untouched.
Of 430 confirmed deaths reviewed by July 5, roughly 400 happened before the patient ever reached a treatment center — a sign, the agency said, that detection, referral and isolation systems are not keeping pace with how fast the virus is moving.
