Texas Gov. Abbott concedes defeat to Democrat Gina Hinojosa
Democrats flip Texas governorship for first time since 1995
WASHINGTON (MNTV) – Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott conceded defeat to Democrat Gina Hinojosa in the state’s governor’s race late Tuesday, handing Democrats the office for the first time since 1995.
In a speech, Abbott said he called Hinojosa to congratulate her after reviewing the results in every county in the state.
“There are still votes to be counted, but mathematically, we’re not going to be able to win this election,” he said.
Abbott said he told Hinojosa he would assist her and her team during the transition period.
“The thing that I’m most proud about is that you all helped me to be your governor for 12 years,” he said.
Abbott, who took office on Jan. 20, 2015, was a longtime governor whose defeat marks a major shift in a state that Republicans have controlled at the top of government for decades.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, President Donald Trump argued that Abbott would not have lost if he had not become a “RINO,” or Republican in name only, in the last six months of his political life.
Trump added that Abbott “went back to his original formula, and it wasn’t pretty.”
Democrats also gained control of the governorships in Iowa and Ohio, with Rob Sand and Amy Acton defeating their Republican opponents, respectively, according to US media reports.
