Polls close in 42 US states as midterm vote counting gets underway
Voting concludes across much of the country, including Michigan, Texas and New York, while western states continue to cast ballots
WASHINGTON (AA) – Polling stations closed across most of the US on Tuesday, with election officials continuing to count ballots in midterm elections that will determine control of Congress.
By 9 pm Eastern Time (0200GMT Wednesday), voting had ended in 42 of the country’s 50 states, including New York, Wisconsin, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana and Minnesota, as well as the remaining polling areas in Michigan, Texas and Kansas.
The latest closures followed earlier voting deadlines in Pennsylvania, Maine, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio and several other states. Polls in Arkansas also closed at 8.30 pm Eastern Time.
With ballots being tallied and results emerging, closely contested congressional races remained central to the battle over control of the House and Senate.
Voters are electing all 435 members of the House of Representatives, 35 senators and governors in 36 states, alongside numerous state and local officials.
Republicans entered the elections holding majorities in both chambers of Congress, while Democrats sought to take control of at least one chamber, potentially constraining President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda.
Voting remained open in several western states. Polling stations were scheduled to close at 10 pm Eastern Time in Nevada, Montana and Utah, followed by California, Washington and the remaining polling areas in Idaho and Oregon at 11 pm.
