Palestinian UN envoy urges action against Israeli settlers
Riyad Mansour calls for settler disarmament and international protection amid escalating violence in the occupied West Bank
NEW YORK (MNTV) — Palestine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, on Tuesday called on the international community to disarm Israeli settlers and strengthen protection for Palestinian civilians, accusing Israel of escalating violence and expanding settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Addressing the UN Security Council, Mansour said existing UN resolutions require Israeli settlers to be disarmed and urged the implementation of international measures to protect Palestinians.
He argued that civilians continue to face attacks in both Gaza and the occupied West Bank and said those responsible must be held accountable.
Mansour also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, alleging that his government’s policies are fueling further violence, displacement and settlement expansion in the occupied territory.
He claimed Israel was intensifying operations in the West Bank to advance annexation, increase pressure on Palestinian communities and pursue domestic political objectives.
He said settlement expansion, forced displacement and attacks by Israeli settlers have become part of a broader strategy to increase Israeli control over Palestinian land.
Mansour rejected descriptions of settlers as civilians casually entering the area, asserting that their actions are intended to intimidate Palestinian communities and drive residents from their homes.
Reiterating that Palestinians are entitled to international protection under international humanitarian law, Mansour said Israel, as the occupying power, has obligations toward the civilian population.
He urged the Security Council and the wider international community to take concrete steps to safeguard Palestinians and again called for Israeli settlers to be disarmed.
According to official Palestinian figures, violence in the occupied West Bank has intensified since the Gaza war began in October 2023.
Palestinian authorities say at least 1,182 Palestinians have been killed, around 13,000 injured and nearly 24,000 arrested during the period.
