GTA News: 50,000 Applications for 5,000 Summer Jobs—The Tough Reality of Toronto’s Youth Job Market.
Wednesday, July 29, 2026. It began as a trickle at 5:45 am, long before the sun rose. However, within an hour, the scene transformed into a massive influx of young Torontonians, freshly graduated from college and armed with resumes, heading to the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) Annual Job Fair at the Enercare Center. They were all searching for temporary employment for the upcoming CNE event.
Mark Holland, CEO of the CNE, announced that nearly 50,000 applications had been submitted even before the job fair officially started. This number represents ten times the 5,000 positions available for the exhibition. He encouraged attendees not to lose hope, as his team was still looking to fill 720 additional positions during the fair.
“We understand how crucial that first job is—it’s essential to provide them with that first opportunity,” Holland remarked to the press, noting that 80% of those hired for the summer exhibition are young individuals.
“Part of our commitment is to ensure that we give youth a leg up and those initial opportunities.”
In a positive development for aspiring young job seekers, Holland revealed that, in light of the competitive job market, this year’s job fair will be expanded to include opportunities from other organizations, such as Metrolinx and the YMCA. Additional resources will also be offered, including resume support and free headshots.
He emphasized that the CNE intends to grow the job fair in the coming years, given the critical employment situation in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), where youth unemployment reached nearly 17% in April of this year.
“By expanding this network, we can hire more young people and provide them with the resources they need to secure a job,” he stated.
Holland was referring to the partnership between the CNE and the City of Toronto, which aims to offer resources such as job training opportunities, access to networking events, guidance on job searching, resume writing, interview preparation, and career counseling to help youth find meaningful employment.
The end-of-summer CNE event is set to kick off on August 21 and run until September 7.
