Jordan marks 80th independence anniversary in Tokyo
Diplomatic reception highlights growing Jordan-Japan ties, cultural exchange and cooperation across economic, security and development sectors
TOKYO, Japan (MNTV) – Jordan celebrated the 80th anniversary of its independence with a gala reception in Tokyo, bringing together senior Japanese officials, diplomats, business leaders and members of the academic community to commemorate eight decades of the Kingdom’s nationhood and its expanding partnership with Japan.
Hosted by Jordanian Ambassador Nasser Shraideh, the event highlighted Jordan’s development since independence and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to modernization under the leadership of King Abdullah II.
In his address, Shraideh described Jordan as a source of stability in a region marked by persistent challenges and said the country’s progress had been shaped by policies promoting moderation, dialogue and peaceful cooperation.
The ambassador also emphasized the close relationship between Jordan and Japan, noting that despite the geographical distance separating the two nations, they share common values, mutual respect and a commitment to innovation and sustainable development.
He said bilateral cooperation has continued to grow across multiple sectors, transforming shared ambitions into practical partnerships.
Looking ahead, Shraideh said Jordan would continue pursuing economic, administrative and political reforms while addressing emerging global challenges, including climate change, technological transformation and evolving geopolitical dynamics.
He also praised Jordan’s national football team for securing its first-ever qualification for the FIFA World Cup, describing the achievement as a source of national pride.
Representing the Japanese government, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Onishi Yohei commended Jordan’s role in promoting regional dialogue and stability, describing the Kingdom as an important partner in the Middle East.
He noted that relations between the two countries have strengthened steadily since they established a Strategic Partnership in 2018, supported by regular high-level exchanges, including King Abdullah II’s latest visit to Japan last year.
Onishi also highlighted expanding cooperation in security, humanitarian assistance and reconstruction efforts, while reaffirming Japan’s continued support for Jordan’s role in hosting refugees.
Guests at the reception enjoyed traditional Jordanian music, folkloric performances and a selection of Jordanian and Arab cuisine. Exhibitions showcasing Jordan’s historical landmarks, archaeological heritage and tourism attractions were also displayed as part of the celebrations.
