Israeli opposition urges ongoing war on Iran as Trump pauses strikes, citing diplomacy amid rising regional tensions and casualties
ISTANBUL, Türkiye (MNTV) — Israeli opposition leader Avigdor Lieberman has demanded that Israel continue military operations against Iran even if the United States withdraws from the conflict, sharply criticizing the government for focusing on legislative debates instead of ongoing hostilities.
His comments underscored a hardline stance on pursuing regime change in Tehran, even as diplomatic efforts and pauses in strikes are being pursued by Washington.
Lieberman, head of the Yisrael Beytenu party, said the campaign against Iran must persist, calling regime change in Tehran “essential.”
He condemned the Knesset for focusing on issues such as expanding rabbinical court powers while northern residents face repeated air raid sirens, describing the government’s approach as “absolute madness.”
The call follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a five-day postponement of strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure, citing “very good and productive” talks with Tehran on achieving a complete resolution of hostilities in the region.
Trump’s temporary pause is contingent on the success of ongoing discussions and comes after weeks of destructive US-Israeli attacks that have killed over 1,340 people, including Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israeli territory as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US forces, inflicting casualties, damaging infrastructure, and disrupting global markets and aviation.
Critics argue that the US-Israel offensive has deepened regional instability and inflicted humanitarian harm, while the pause in strikes reflects the unsustainable pressures on Washington’s military and economic position.
