Iraq plans tenfold increase in Akkas gas output
Akkas gas field is expected to reach 400 million cubic feet daily by 2030 from its current 43 million
BAGHDAD, Iraq (MNTV) — Iraq plans to increase production at the Akkas gas field in Anbar province nearly tenfold by 2030 under a new development agreement with U.S. energy company ConocoPhillips.
Zawya reported that Iraq has awarded ConocoPhillips a contract to expand the country’s major gas field, as Baghdad moves ahead with plans to increase domestic gas production and strengthen its energy infrastructure.
Mohammed Hassan, director general of Iraq’s state-owned Midland Oil Company, said production at Akkas is planned to rise to 400 million cubic feet per day (mcfd) by 2030, compared with about 43 mcfd currently.
Hassan said Iraqi officials are preparing to meet a ConocoPhillips delegation in Baghdad to discuss implementing an agreement signed between the Iraqi Oil Ministry and the U.S. company during Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi’s recent visit to the United States.
The agreement forms part of a series of major deals Iraq has signed with international energy companies to develop its oil and gas sector. Other companies involved include HKN, Chevron and several other major international energy firms.
The first phase of Akkas field development was previously awarded to U.S.-based oilfield services company SLB. The company is currently drilling six gas wells and constructing a gas processing facility near the field in western Anbar, Iraq’s largest province.
Under the existing plan, SLB is building a processing plant capable of handling 100 mcfd of gas. Hassan said production is expected to reach 100 mcfd by the middle of 2027 before eventually rising to the targeted 400 mcfd by 2030.
The expansion is intended to increase Iraq’s domestic gas supply and support the country’s wider efforts to develop its oil and gas infrastructure through partnerships with international energy companies.
Iraq, one of OPEC’s largest oil producers, has been seeking to expand gas production as part of efforts to strengthen its energy sector and make greater use of its domestic hydrocarbon resources.
