Iraq launches security operation after secret Israeli site claims
Baghdad says forces are securing western desert regions following online reports alleging existence of covert Israeli-linked presence
BAGHDAD, Iraq (MNTV) — Iraqi security forces launched a large-scale military operation in desert areas between Najaf and Karbala following controversy surrounding online claims about an alleged covert Israeli-linked site in the region.
The operation involves Iraqi army units and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) and is being carried out under orders from the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, according to Iraqi officials.
Ali al-Hamdani, commander of the PMF’s Middle Euphrates Operations, said the mission is aimed at reinforcing state authority and securing remote desert areas in western Iraq.
Iraq’s Ministry of Defense said Army Chief of Staff Abdul-Amir Yarallah traveled to the Nukhaib area in southwestern Iraq to oversee troop deployments and monitor ongoing security measures.
The operation follows widespread circulation of videos and images on social media over recent days claiming to show clashes between Iraqi forces and alleged Israeli elements in desert zones between Najaf and Karbala.
Some activists also shared images of an Iraqi shepherd who reportedly claimed to have discovered the alleged site and informed security authorities.
Earlier this week, the Iraqi government acknowledged that Iraqi forces had confronted unidentified armed elements in March and forced them to withdraw with aerial support.
According to the Iraqi Security Media Cell (ISMC), the incident occurred on March 5 and resulted in the death of one Iraqi security member and injuries to two others.
However, Iraqi authorities denied the existence of any unauthorized foreign military bases inside the country.
The ISMC said Iraqi forces have conducted extensive search operations across desert regions over the past two months without finding evidence of foreign military presence.
The latest operation comes amid heightened regional tensions following the recent conflict involving Iran and Israel, with Iraqi officials seeking to reassure the public over national security and territorial sovereignty.
