Iraq launches ebrd star venture to boost startups
Program aims to scale high-potential businesses, strengthen SMEs, and attract regional and global investment to Iraq’s economy
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (MNTV) — Iraq has officially launched the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Star Venture Programme alongside its SME Finance and Development initiatives, marking a milestone for the country’s startup ecosystem.
The initiative, supported by the European Union, seeks to strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises and accelerate the growth of high-potential Iraqi startups.
Officials said the program offers technical assistance, advisory services, and access to international networks to help local startups meet global standards in governance, scalability, and competitiveness.
By providing structured support, the initiative aims to integrate Iraqi businesses into regional and international markets more effectively.
The launch reflects growing international confidence in Iraq’s private sector and its potential as a hub for innovation. Once primarily viewed as an emerging market, Iraq is increasingly being recognized for entrepreneurial growth and its expanding ecosystem for startups.
The initiative aligns with the Iraq Growth and Innovation Program (IGIP), which focuses on bridging local talent with global best practices.
Experts said the presence of major international institutions such as the EBRD and the European Union signals a strong endorsement of Iraq’s reform efforts and economic potential.
By fostering innovation and providing resources for SMEs, the program aims to position Iraq as an attractive destination for investors seeking opportunities in the region while supporting long-term economic diversification and private-sector development.
