Indonesia sets modest gold target for the Asian Games
Jakarta aims for four golds in Japan and offers nearly $200,000 to each winner, after dropping events that once boosted its tally
JAKARTA, Indonesia (MNTV) — Indonesia has set a target of four gold medals at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan, a more conservative aim than the seven it won in Hangzhou in 2023, with the government offering about $198,500 to each gold medalist, the Antara news agency reported.
The lower target reflects the dropping of three events that had been strong medal sources — two dragon-boat disciplines and a shooting event — from the 2026 program.
Indonesia is pinning its hopes on badminton, its traditional strength, along with sport climbing and weightlifting; its climbing federation is targeting two golds, and its weightlifting body one.
The bonus continues a steep rise in Indonesian medal incentives, from about $22,700 per individual gold in 2014 to $85,200 when Indonesia hosted the Games in 2018.
Deputy Sports Minister Taufik Hidayat, himself the Athens 2004 Olympic badminton champion, urged athletes not to treat bonuses as their main motivation, saying rewards would follow achievement.
The sports ministry has also partnered with financial institutions to offer medalists financial-literacy programs.
The Asian Games, which gather Asia’s top sporting nations, run Sept. 19 to Oct. 4.
