Egypt to build first wind turbine factory
New agreement includes manufacturing facility and 2 GW wind farm to boost renewable energy capacity
CAIRO, Egypt (MNTV) – Egypt has signed a memorandum of understanding to establish its first wind turbine manufacturing plant and develop a 2-gigawatt wind power project in the Gulf of Suez, as the country accelerates efforts to expand renewable energy production and localize clean energy technologies.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly attended the signing ceremony at the Cabinet headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, alongside Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat.
The agreement was signed by China’s SANY Renewable Energy, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA).
The project aims to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities in the renewable energy sector while reducing dependence on imported equipment. Officials said the factory will produce wind turbines and related components for local projects, with excess production earmarked for export to markets across Africa and the Middle East.
The initiative forms part of Egypt’s broader strategy to increase local content in renewable energy projects and expand the production of electrical equipment used in solar and wind power generation.
The agreement also covers the construction of a 2 GW wind farm in the Gulf of Suez. Authorities said the project will be implemented using local currency and support Egypt’s target of increasing renewable energy’s share in the national energy mix to 45% within the next two years.
Madbouly said renewable energy projects play a crucial role in diversifying electricity sources and enhancing the resilience of Egypt’s power sector. He described the localization of renewable energy industries as an important component of the country’s energy security and environmental transition plans.
The prime minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding cooperation with private investors and state institutions to implement solar, wind and energy storage projects.
Esmat said the wind turbine factory is expected to have an annual production capacity of 2 GW and is scheduled for completion within two years after final agreements are finalized.
He added that the accompanying 2,000-megawatt wind farm is expected to be connected to the national grid within 23 months of implementation.
The minister noted that Egypt’s growing renewable energy market and extensive trade links position the country to become a regional center for renewable energy manufacturing and exports.
