Don’t Miss These Ramadan Hot Spots Around the GTA
If you’re curious about who else is celebrating Ramadan this year, here are some events you should consider attending.
Iftars and Fundraisers.
This year, many iftars across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are supporting important social causes.
Join Islamic Relief Canada for their Grand Iftar at the Scarborough Convention Centre on February 22, which aims to support vulnerable children and families. Additionally, contributions to the International Development and Relief Foundation’s Toronto Community Iftar at the Versailles Convention Centre on February 28 will help families in Palestine. Tickets for both events can be purchased online.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims will host their iftar event in Mississauga on February 22, featuring author and journalist Mehdi Hasan. Donations from this event will support the organization’s ongoing legal initiatives, advocacy for policy change, and community protection against discrimination. Tickets are available for purchase online.
More fundraising iftars will take place throughout the GTA during Ramadan, including an Oakville iftar for Palestinian refugees, a Muslim Legal Support Centre iftar in Scarborough, and a Mississauga iftar that funds programs for safer shelter and support for Muslim women and children across Canada.
Festivals and Markets.
The GTA Ramadan Festival in Mississauga will showcase local crafts and products, interactive games, and live performances. Ronaq-e-Ramadan will run from February 28 to March 1, while separate festivities marking the final days of Ramadan will be held from March 14 to 19. Tickets are free and can be ordered online.
A Ramadan market in Scarborough will feature clothing and jewelry vendors, live entertainment, and giveaways, including a 40-inch smart TV, a designer suit, a diamond ring, and an air fryer. The market will take place on February 28 and March 1, running from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Library Story Times.
Throughout the holy month, the Muslim Women of Durham Region, in partnership with libraries in the GTA, is hosting Ramadan Story Times. These events invite families to celebrate and learn about Ramadan through storytelling, craft stations, coloring activities, and henna designs.
The events will be held at:
– Ajax Public Library on February 21 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
– Whitby Central Library on February 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
– Pickering Public Library on February 28 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
