Don’t Call a Genocide a Genocide: Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs
They infiltrated student groups to disrupt pro-Palestine protests, physically attacked students who dared to raise their voices against a genocide, and threatened senior faculty at leading Canadian universities to get student protestors arrested or even expelled. They caused those protesting the ethnic cleansing in Gaza to lose their jobs and pressured public institutions to outlaw any activity they defined as pro-Palestine.
A Canadian Palestinian, who has called this country home for over half a century, expressed it well: “It’s as if they are not content with killing so many of us; they want to inflict more pain by not allowing us to vent or mourn our losses. Even animals are kinder than that.”
These are words of pain and agony, powerful enough to touch even the hardest of hearts. Yet, for those perpetuating this tragic holocaust, it is business as usual. They continue their actions of bullying, threatening, physically assaulting, blackmailing, and tarnishing personal and professional reputations for 77 long years. When these tactics do not succeed, they escalate their retribution, and we all know what happens when that happens – people die.
Their latest act of cold-blooded callousness was to block a motion co-presented by Brampton City Councillors Gurpartap Singh Toor and Navjot Kaur Brar, which called on the Government of Canada to acknowledge the Israeli-Gaza conflict as a genocide and to “immediately establish a full two-way arms embargo between Canada and Israel, while cancelling all existing arms export permits.”
The pushback was swift. The CIJA’s Director of Government Relations sent a letter to Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown and the City Council, urging them to reject the “divisive and one-sided motion.” According to CIJA, the motion pertained to an international “conflict” that was beyond the city’s purview. It also warned that considering the motion would deepen community divisions and stigmatise Brampton’s Jewish residents.
Conclusion: The Brampton Council deferred the discussion on the motion and referred it to the Interfaith Council of Peel.
Thus, yet another attempt to categorise the bloodshed and destruction in Gaza as genocide is effectively held at ransom by those who perpetrated it.
