Promise You Won’t Laugh! Toronto’s Snow Removal Contract Does Not Include “Snow Removal”
It took Mayor Olivia Chow to notice a glaring omission in Toronto’s snow removal contract, proving that not much goes unnoticed by her. It is hard to explain how this oversight escaped the attention of city officials.
The story thus far: As the city prepares for the 2025 winter season, Mayor Chow’s team is focused on learning from the city’s failure during the February ’25 snowstorms that dumped nearly 50 cm of snow on city roads. While reviewing the fine print of the snow removal contract, Mayor Chow discovered one major issue: there was no mention of ‘snow removal’ in the contract.
Mayor Chow described this oversight as a “fatal flaw” and vowed to correct the error immediately.
Additionally, she announced that there would no longer be a blackout period for the 311 service during snow emergencies, allowing Torontonians to report severe snow events promptly.
Other items on Mayor Chow’s agenda include plans to purchase new equipment to replace nearly half of the sidewalk clearing equipment that is currently out of operation. She has also instructed the city manager to review the current snow removal contract and revamp it before its renewal in 2029.
