Argentina offers to export beef, cattle to Indonesia
Indonesia weighs price, trade reciprocity, and halal compliance
JAKARTA, Indonesia (MNTV) – Argentina has proposed exporting beef and cattle to Indonesia, as Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries Agustin Tejeda Rodriguez met with Indonesian Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono on Wednesday to discuss the initiative.
The proposed beef import agreement would involve intergovernmental coordination, with private companies managing implementation.
Rodriguez emphasized Argentina’s commitment to expanding international trade and fostering stronger ties with Indonesia.
“We are opening our doors to global markets and are eager to strengthen our relationship with Indonesia,” he said.
Indonesia is considering three critical factors in evaluating Argentina’s proposal.
First, the distance between the two nations raises concerns about pricing competitiveness.
Second, Indonesia seeks a reciprocal arrangement to export its own commodities, including horticultural products, fruits, poultry, and processed goods, to Argentina.
Finally, halal certification is a key requirement for food products entering Indonesia, given the predominantly Muslim population.
“Halal is a very important issue in food consumption,” Sudaryono stated, emphasizing the significance of meeting religious dietary standards.
Despite the enthusiasm, Rodriguez has yet to specify the volume of beef Argentina could supply. Sudaryono expressed optimism about the proposal, saying, “Hopefully, we can taste Argentine beef this year.”
