Mississauga’s New Mayor Outlines Plans for the Next Four Years.
“He has hit the ground running,” is how some Mississaugans are describing Alvin Tedjo’s rapid implementation of his election promises. Just one day after his decisive victory over established candidates Carolynn Parish and Bonnie Crombie, Tedjo has rolled up his sleeves and is ready to take action.
Tedjo announced his immediate priorities, highlighting affordability, crime, housing, transportation, and the economy as critical areas requiring his attention.
“We have put forth practical solutions that will make a difference in people’s lives. Now it’s time to put those solutions into action,” Tedjo told reporters outside Mississauga City Hall yesterday (Tuesday).
“Over the next four years, I’m committed to living up to the extraordinary trust that has been placed in me by my fellow residents. It is, without a doubt, the honor of a lifetime to be elected the next mayor of Mississauga and to build a better future for every single resident.”
Tedjo stated that during his first 100 days in office, he plans to focus on creating the city’s budget in consultation with the council.
Affordability: To address the pressing issues facing the city and its residents, he emphasized the need to tackle affordability first. He referenced a September report from Food Banks Mississauga, which revealed that approximately 43,000 city residents utilized the food banks more than 513,000 times in the past year.
“That shows me, and it shows the public, that we have a much less affordable city and a significant problem regarding the cost of living,” he said.
Property Taxes: This is the second priority on his agenda, which he plans to address immediately. He confirmed his intention to freeze property taxes “right now” for two years for all homeowners within the current budget cycle. He explained that he would achieve this freeze by “cutting waste, implementing a hiring freeze, and ensuring that the city does not increase spending.”
Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs): Tedjo also outlined his plan to support small businesses by expediting the permit process. “That’s something that we’re going to start working on right away. It’s going to take time to implement fully, but we are committed to getting it done as soon as possible,” he said.
Housing and Economic Development: “We do have several alignments with the provincial government concerning the construction of more housing, as well as ensuring that our city is well-positioned for economic development. Given the global challenges we face, Mississauga can be part of the solution,” he added.
Regarding his victory, he noted that his campaign focused on policies rather than personalities. “It was an incredible journey,” he remarked.
Tedjo’s inauguration is set for mid-November.
