EU reaffirms support for Syria on first anniversary of Assad’s ouster
The European Union renewed its support for Syria as the country marked one year since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government
GENEVA (MNTV) — The European Union on Monday renewed its support for Syria as the country marked one year since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government.
European Council President Antonio Costa said Syrians were taking steps toward a more stable and inclusive future, pledging continued European backing for a peaceful, Syrian-led political process centered on justice, reconciliation and the rights of all Syrians.
He made the remarks in a post on the social media platform X.
Costa also reiterated the EU’s commitment to political engagement, emergency humanitarian assistance and long-term recovery and reconstruction efforts.
Bashar al-Assad, who ruled Syria for nearly a quarter century, fled to Russia in December last year, bringing an end to the Baath Party’s decades-long rule that began in 1963.
A new transitional government led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was established in January.
