Uzbekistan to launch global contest for a unique Quran manuscript
A calligraphy project aims to unite traditions of different Islamic schools in single handwritten Quran
TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (MNTV) — Uzbekistan will announce a global calligraphy contest to create a unique Quran manuscript on Aug. 26, at the Center of Islamic Civilization in Tashkent during an international media forum, organizers said, according to UzDaily.
The project, titled “Quran of the World: From the Tradition of Calligraphy to the Heritage of the Future,” aims to bring together the traditions of various international calligraphy schools in a single manuscript, said Habibullo Solikh, who heads the center’s calligraphy school.
The forum, themed on Islamic civilization, will also feature a panel on the media’s role in countering stereotypes and Islamophobia, with delegates from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and from Algeria, Oman, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Mali, and Uzbekistan.
Other projects to be presented include preserving Islamic manuscripts and using AI to read ancient texts.
Uzbekistan’s calligraphy school teaches traditional scripts including Thuluth, Naskh, and Kufic, and the art also features in the new Imam al-Bukhari complex in the Samarkand region, which houses a hadith research center.
The forum gathers about 300 media figures and scholars from nearly 50 countries.
