Kazakh scientists develop drought-resistant barley
New Batyrkhan variety, bred for saline and dry conditions, has been submitted for state testing
ASTANA, Kazakhstan (MNTV) — Kazakh scientists have developed a new spring barley variety, Batyrkhan, bred for the country’s dry and saline soils, and have submitted it for state testing and a patent, the outlet Egemen.kz reported.
The variety offers high and stable yields, large grain, and resistance to lodging, several diseases, drought, and soil salinization, researchers said.
It matures in 75 to 85 days and has a relatively long early growth period of at least 20 days, which helps the plant build vegetative mass and fill its grain well.
It is resistant to powdery mildew and black spot but weakly susceptible to fusarium root rot.
Batyrkhan was developed jointly by the Y. Zhakayev Kazakh Rice Research Institute and the Institute of Plant Biology and Biotechnology, through selection from a hybrid population.
Submission for state testing marks a step toward its use in farming, during which its agronomic value across Kazakhstan’s varied conditions will be assessed; the patent application protects the result as intellectual property.
