US president open to meeting North Korean leader during Asia tour
US President Donald Trump has said he is open to meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his upcoming visit to South Korea
WASHINGTON, United States (MNTV) – US President Donald Trump has said he is open to meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his upcoming visit to South Korea, adding that he “got along great” with Kim and would be willing to extend his Asia trip for the meeting.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “I’d love to meet him if he’d like to meet. I got along great with Kim Jong Un. If he wants to meet, I’ll be in South Korea.”
Asked whether he might extend his stay, he replied, “I think the answer would be, yeah.”
The remarks came as part of the president’s broader diplomatic outreach to reaffirm ties with key Asian partners amid security challenges on the Korean Peninsula.
The two leaders last met in 2019 at the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea.
While nuclear talks have since collapsed, Trump continues to express confidence in his personal relationship with Kim.
North Korea has said it would only resume dialogue if Washington acknowledges its nuclear capability, which it calls “irreversible.”
Trump’s South Korea visit will include meetings with President Lee Jae Myung and Chinese President Xi Jinping during APEC summit events.
