US-based Nano Nuclear eyes Middle East market after UAE deal
US nuclear company plans to explore reactor deployment opportunities in UAE and selected Gulf markets
ABU DHABI, UAE (MNTV) — US-based NANO Nuclear Energy is looking to expand its presence in the Middle East following a partnership with UAE investment company EHC Investment to explore deployment of its micro modular reactors.
The company’s chief executive, James Walker, said the Middle East could see increased interest in nuclear energy as governments focus more heavily on energy security and electricity demand continues to grow.
NANO Nuclear is developing the KRONOS MMR, a 15-megawatt high-temperature gas-cooled reactor intended to provide electricity for power-intensive applications and critical infrastructure.
The company signed a memorandum of understanding with Abu Dhabi-based EHC Investment in February to explore a joint venture focused on deploying micro modular reactors in the UAE and establishing the necessary supply chains.
Under the agreement, NANO Nuclear and EHC are examining potential opportunities in the UAE and selected markets elsewhere in the Gulf region.
The companies are also assessing potential sites and users for KRONOS MMR reactors, including industrial facilities, data centers and other energy-intensive infrastructure.
The work includes examining legal, policy and regulatory requirements, as well as identifying relevant stakeholders and possible sources of financing and investment for future projects.
NANO Nuclear and EHC have said they expect to pursue a formal joint venture after securing a first commercial project or order.
NucNet reported that Walker sees the region’s growing focus on energy security and the expansion of artificial intelligence data centers as factors that could support increased demand for nuclear power.
The UAE agreement represents NANO Nuclear’s initial step into the Gulf market. The company said its discussions with EHC are intended to help assess regional opportunities and determine potential pathways for future nuclear projects.
EHC Investment is based in Abu Dhabi and operates as a diversified investment holding company. Its energy subsidiary, EHC Energy, operates in areas including gas contracting, distribution, trading, operations and maintenance.
NANO Nuclear said the companies will also examine opportunities to establish a nuclear supply chain and identify possible future commercial agreements involving EHC or other stakeholders.
The KRONOS MMR is among the advanced nuclear technologies being developed by NANO Nuclear. The company describes the system as a modular reactor designed to provide scalable, reliable and carbon-free electricity.
The UAE partnership does not represent a confirmed reactor construction project. The current agreement is focused on evaluating deployment opportunities, regulatory requirements, potential sites, financing and other conditions necessary for future projects.
NANO Nuclear said it intends to use the findings from its engagement with EHC to guide its longer-term decisions regarding the region.
