UN warns Gaza farmland destroyed, triggering food crisis

NEW YORK, United States (MNTV) — The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has warned that almost all farmland in Gaza has been destroyed or rendered inaccessible, triggering a severe food crisis across the territory.
The agency said the devastation has crippled Gaza’s agricultural sector, wiping out livelihoods and pushing food prices to record highs. The price of tomatoes, for instance, has surged from $0.60 to $15 per kilogram—if available at all—leaving families without both income and affordable food.
“Nearly all agricultural land in Gaza has been destroyed or made inaccessible,” UNRWA reported, warning that the collapse of local food production has left the population dependent on dwindling aid supplies.
While a US-brokered ceasefire agreement allows for 600 aid trucks to enter Gaza daily, the Gaza Government Media Office said only 653 trucks have arrived in total since the truce began on October 10.
UNRWA stressed that unrestricted humanitarian access is urgently needed until Gaza’s food production can be restored.
The destruction of farmland comes amid widespread devastation that has left nearly 68,000 Palestinians dead since October 2023 and much of Gaza’s infrastructure in ruins.
Large parts of the territory remain uninhabitable, compounding what the UN describes as one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent memory.
