Algeria advances national AI strategy with government roadmap
Inter-ministerial plan aims to expand public-sector AI, develop local expertise, and strengthen national technological sovereignty
ALGIERS, Algeria (MNTV) — Algeria has begun implementing its national artificial intelligence strategy through a coordinated government roadmap aimed at expanding AI applications in public services and strengthening the country’s technological independence.
The initiative followed a coordination meeting held on August 5 involving representatives of several ministries and national institutions, according to Tech Africa News.
The meeting was chaired by Higher Education and Scientific Research Minister Kamel Baddari and focused on establishing shared priorities for integrating artificial intelligence into government operations.
A central component of the roadmap is the development of sovereign, open-source AI models designed for use in public-sector applications.
The government also plans to expand access to high-performance computing facilities, allowing research institutions and startups to develop and train AI systems domestically.
The strategy places particular emphasis on building Algeria’s national AI workforce. Intensive training programs are planned in cooperation with universities and research institutions, covering fields such as data analytics and generative artificial intelligence.
Officials also proposed establishing a specialized scientific research center and dedicated research units to strengthen domestic AI research and help convert academic developments into industrial applications.
The roadmap calls for government and administrative data to be securely processed and stored within national data centers.
Authorities also stressed that AI systems should be developed and deployed according to principles of security, reliability, and ethical use.
The meeting concluded with the creation of a joint monitoring committee responsible for supervising implementation and ensuring that the roadmap’s objectives are carried out according to an established timetable.
The initiative is intended to move Algeria’s AI strategy from policy planning toward practical government applications while supporting the modernization and digital transformation of public administration.
