UK backs Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as credible solution for Western Sahara dispute
London joins over 113 countries supporting Morocco’s initiative amid growing international consensus and strengthened bilateral ties with Rabat
RABAT, Morocco (MNTV) – The United Kingdom has officially endorsed Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the most credible, viable, and pragmatic solution to the long-standing Western Sahara dispute, joining over 113 countries backing the initiative.
The announcement came during British Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s visit to Rabat, where he met with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
In a joint statement, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and advancing regional stability, according to local as well as international sources.
Lammy emphasized that the UK is “ready, willing, and determined” to support the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, and reiterated London’s support for the UN-led political process.
The UK, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, also highlighted the urgency of resolving the Western Sahara issue in a manner that benefits all parties and promotes regional integration in North Africa.
“This marks a major diplomatic milestone and reflects the UK’s belief in Morocco’s pivotal role as a strategic partner in the region,” the statement said.
The move follows years of sustained UK support for Morocco’s engagement in the UN process. The British government had previously signaled a shift in its position, and Lammy confirmed in April that the Western Sahara file was under active review.
The endorsement aligns the UK with other major powers, including the United States and France, who have backed Morocco’s sovereignty over the southern provinces.
Calls from British lawmakers for official recognition of the autonomy plan have also intensified in recent years, with over 30 MPs and peers writing to the Foreign Office urging the government to take action.
The Rabat meeting also resulted in a renewed pledge to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.
According to the joint statement, Morocco and the UK will enhance collaboration in security, defense, climate, education, scientific research, health, and cultural exchange.
The two countries committed to addressing regional and global challenges together while upholding principles of peace, tolerance, and human rights.
